My youngest daughter is artistic. Something she definitely didn’t get from me – at least not in the crafts department. She is turning nine in a few days and her one request for a birthday present is a sewing machine and some sewing patterns for beginners.

Now, I have a love-hate relationship with sewing. Technically I know how to sew and was taught by one of the best seamstresses I’ve ever known, my mother. She is ever so patient and a great teacher but I am a horrible student. I cannot sew a straight line to save my life! However, I do know how to sew on a button and hem pants by hand, so that’s something, right?

Thankfully, my husband and I are in this parenting-homeschool lifestyle together and he is a whiz on the sewing machine. He is actually amazing, which is perfect so he can teach my daughter too. In fact, my daughter told me “[I] should take lessons from Daddy with her!” Isn’t that sweet?!

Getting started with Sewing

This year my daughter is getting her wish and has purchased a beginner sewing machine with her birthday money to get started. She has high hopes for her sewing skills to just take off like a wildfire, but I know she will need some guidance. So I started gathering some patterns for beginning sewers.

But before you crack open the sewing machine and patterns, make sure your child(ren) know the meaning of sewing terms they will use frequently. Better yet, incorporate it into your homeschool with this FREE Sewing Terminology Copywork Notebook

Once you know the terms, you can check out some of these hacks to make your sewing experience even better and easier.

Are There Sewing Holidays?

Yes! September is National Sewing Month and June 13th is National Sewing Machine Day. Sewing is a wonderful skill to have and intentionally teaching your kids how to sew in June or September are great times to start.
