Exploring photography with your children will create a lasting interest in art. These free resources about photography and famous photographers will build skills interest in both younger and older kids.
Introducing photography to children at a young age is a perfect route to take if you aren’t really an artsy mom. I have to admittedly say that out loud – I am not artistically inclined.
That is why, I am very grateful that my friend chose to give my kids a camera a few years ago. We have embraced photography and music into our homeschool because I started homeschooling when my kids were a little older.
My kids were both over 6 years old when I started homeschooling. So thankfully, I didn’t have to do many crafts – other than crafts my kids were able to do on their own.

However, for now, exploring photography is where we will keep our focus.

There is something about photography that allows my kids to want to get the best shot. I think it may be the idea that they can capture a moment in time. They can take life, and capture its beauty.
They have such a sense of pride when discovering that they have taken a photo others think is beautiful.
Here are a few tips from research online that has helped my kids along the way (they are still working on their skills, but the more they practice the better they get):
1. Take as many photos as possible.
The more photos your children take, the more they are triggered to appreciate the world around them. They tend to see the beauty in things when before they may not have even noticed.
2. Keep it fun.
Making photography more of a hobby and less of a task or assignment can make all the difference. It isn’t about us critiquing, but about them improving.
Play photography games and give some challenges that your student can do independently. It will build their confidence and eagerness to explore the world more.
3. Ownership means motivation.
Try to get your children their own cameras. After a while, our friend thankfully gave my daughter her own camera. My kids were able to take their own camera wherever they wanted to, instead of fight over who would use the camera.
If it is within your budget, get your kids their own camera. If not, then a simple camera schedule will do.
4. Make sure your kids understand how to hold the camera and why.
I asked my friend who is experienced in photography to show my kids how to hold it properly. The way artists hold cameras is super important to get the shots they are looking for.
How to hold the camera and holding it steady can make a huge difference in how a photo turns out.
5. Life is busy, teach your kids to see.
Yes, I said, “see.” Point out objects in Creation and around everyday life so kids stop to see the beauty of things around them.
During walks, car rides, and even around the house, train your child’s eyes to see what God created them for – to see His glory all around.
6. Photography is not just taking photos.
It takes many things to get a good shot. Your kids will need to select their own topics, use different angles, learn about the background, and even edit the photos. Use the resources below to teach kids all about photography.

Encourage your children to express themselves and even tell a story with their shots. Avoid being negative, and rather provide input on improving their technique. It will do wonders for your child’s confidence.
Even at a very young age, kids can start learning all about photography. The best thing about photography is that kids can capture God’s Creation all around. It is a skill they can take with them all their lives.
