Firefighters are like accessible heroes. Kids can think firefighters are pretty cool, so use these free printables all about firefighting to teach them about the heroes.
Do you know a firefighter?
I was about to say that I don’t know much about firefighting, and then I remembered one thing. My husband was a Fireman in the United States Navy. How cool is that?!
Of course, his role was way different from the firefighters we see in our community. My husband worked on a carrier and spent most of his days on the carrier’s flight deck and tower, waiting for planes to land. It was a critical role for the Navy.
Our neighborhood firefighter roles are just as critical. The firefighters we see go out on way more calls and do different things.
I remember when I was an early learning teacher at an inner-city school. One of the highlights of our students’ year was the local Fire Station visit.
Firefighters would bring the fire truck to the parking lot. They would talk to the kids and let them take a tour of the fire truck. Our students loved this so much.
The week of the Fire Station visit, we would do all-things-firefighting and fire safety. If you want to teach fire safety in your homeschool, the resource below will help.

Who are your local firefighters?
We are all in unity when we think about firefighting, it is one of those cool jobs that everyone appreciates. They don’t just fight fires but do several interesting things aside from fighting fires.
Firefighting is a dangerous and arduous job. You absolutely have to be a team player as a firefighter. One wrong move could mean life or death, so the firefighters learn to trust and depend on each other.
If you wonder why it is crucial to teach teamwork to kids, well, this definitely is a career choice that requires people to be team players.
Thankfully, kids can learn early on to work as a team. Here are a few resources to help you teach team building and the importance of firefighters in our communities.

Firefighters are on call throughout their shift to respond to a variety of emergencies on a moment’s notice.
Did you know that firefighters most likely are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) as well? I didn’t realize that, but it makes total sense. They are first responders and would need to know what to do in medical emergencies as well as fires.
A few firefighter facts:
There are over 1 million firefighters in the United States, including career firefighters and volunteers.
There are actually more volunteer firefighters than there are career firefighters. That is so interesting to me. Over 700,000 firefighters are volunteers.
Here is why firefighters need to be EMTs as well. In 2014, 21 million out of the 30+ million calls requiring firefighter responses were for medical assistance.
There are about 27,000 fire departments in the United States and 58,000 fire stations.
Yes, firefighters are cool. I mean, they fight fires from the home to wildfires in the forest that save humans and animals. They are even cooler than that if you can believe it. Let me tell you why.
Why firefighters are even cooler than you might think.
1. Gold melts at 1845 °F. Firefighter uniforms can withstand up to 2200°F.
2. Firefighters’ uniforms can weigh anything from 5 to 30 kgs.
3. Women have worked right alongside male firefighters since the 1800s.
4. Whenever animals are in a pinch, the firefighters are the first to call. Whether a cow gets stuck in a ditch, a dog falls in a well, or a cat stuck in a tree, firefighters are surely your hometown heroes.
5. Dogs are very much a part of the fire station family. We usually associate Dalmatians with fire stations; they are known as the official dog for firefighters.
Dalmation tidbit: In the past, Dalmatians would run ahead of a fire brigade barking and clearing the way for the horses to get through. The Dalmatian breed is known to be fearless, quick learning, and can easily find a common language with other animals.
6. It only takes a firefighter 2 minutes to get dressed for duty?

Firefighters sacrifice so much just to do their job. They work long hours and even have shifts that last 48-72 hours at a time.
Their families know they are everyday heroes. However, reality tells them that there is a chance that one day their firefighter family member may leave and never return.
So if you have a prayer list for your family, make sure you add your local firefighters and families to that list. Also, maybe make an effort with your kids to bake or cook a treat or two for the fire station throughout the year.
Sometimes these service roles are thankless, but we can show appreciation with just a small kind gesture.
