I was never an outdoor kid. I loved playing outdoors, but as I got older I enjoyed dancing and music more, which were always done indoors. My kids, however, love playing outside every chance they get. Even my little ones love being outside.
Now that we travel full-time, their love for the outdoors has only increased. They love going on walks, exploring the trails in our campground or nearby parks. They enjoy playing sports and making up their own games with new friends. It isn’t unheard of that they will be gone for hours with only minimal communication on the walkie-talkie.
So studying nature and the great outdoors is almost like second nature to us. When we take walks or hikes, we observe the trees and their leaves, we look for animal footprints, and flowers too. Since we have limited space, we take pictures on our phones and then come back to research and find out what we saw.
It’s a bit like a backward scavenger hunt. My kids love these days and learning about nature. They often record their findings in a notebook so they can keep them too. There are many different ways to create a nature notebook and ways to study nature, so find one that works for your child.
If you have the book Nature Anatomy by Julia Rothman at home, you can use our Nature Notebook right along with it for an enriching science journey through nature!
Using this notebooking journal on nature, students will use a combination of written narration, drawing, and labeling alongside Nature Anatomy – The Curious Parts and Pieces of the Natural World by Julia Rothman to learn all about the Earth, plants, animals, and much more.
Notebooking is a great way to collect and store facts, lessons, drawings, crafts and more about nature. Check out these great ideas and FREE printables to get started.
