I love teaching math in ways that are not typical. By “typical,” I mean the way I was taught. I honestly cannot remember a thing when learning about area and perimeter, other than when I showed my teenager through research in our homeschool. These ideas and worksheets to teach area and perimeter may help you during math time like they did mine.
I have learned over the years that it greatly benefits children to teach them concepts before application.
I remember in school we learned the mathematical formulas; then we were given worksheets to just do it. What if kids didn’t get it? What if kids made mistakes, but the teacher needed to move on to the next lesson on the syllabus? Shouldn’t the learning process include “why” a formula is necessary?
Unfortunately, this gap in learning happens often. When researching how to teach my daughter area and perimeter, I was happy to know I could use worksheets for practice but really teach the concepts so she can actually “get it.”
Finding the area and perimeter are things kids really can apply in life. Therefore, when teaching my daughter, I was more interested in helping her understand why she needed to learn it and how the formulas work. Understanding the concepts help her retain what she was learning more effectively.
The worksheets then allowed my daughter to practice and improve her problem-solving skills with the formulas. It was a good adventure; one of my homeschooling mom WINS.
Check out these activities to get your children engaged when learning area and perimeter:
Pattern block designs
Many of us have pattern blocks at home or in the playroom. If so, these are perfect for having your students find the perimeter of the pattern blocks using the side of the square as 1 unit. Students can then make designs out of the pattern blocks and trace their design on construction paper to solve.
Minecraft Lover Area and Perimeter Practice
The game Minecraft is a great way to teach solving for area or perimeter by building a variety of square or rectangular structures. My son loves Minecraft, so I am definitely using this method with him when teaching area and perimeter next year.
Building rectangles
Kids like my son do well being able to “see” math. Most kids really grasp concepts when they can “see” math as well. Building rectangular blocks with construction paper can help kids visually see the sides they need to measure for areas or rectangles.
Cheez-it cracker area and perimeter
Cheez-its make perfect area and perimeter squares on a sheet for practice. Kids can make their own shapes with the Cheez-its on a sheet of paper; they draw a picture of each image on their recording sheet and then solve for area or perimeter.

Some types of math, kids can legitimately argue that they will never use it. However, knowledge of area and perimeter is not one. Besides mathematics being a career field that needs more people, some concepts in math are extremely useful for us to learn.
The practical application of area and perimeter is used by architects, engineers, graphic designers, or farmers (calculation of planting seeds in a field).
Understanding how space works help everyday folks like you and me in things like hanging up picture frames, painting a room, buying a home, remodeling a kitchen, or building a deck. Helping kids to understand the importance of area and perimeter will motivate them to want to learn it.
