Real life math lessons resonate well with kids, especially when the kids aren’t too crazy about math. This free real-life lesson allows kids to actually use integers in a meaningful context. Kids are able to see integer rules play out, like when a negative and subtract a positive you end up with a bigger negative.
Visually seeing math problems help the many kids that are visual learners and can use to make connections in their learning experiences. Finding free math printables is a great way to help solidify math topics that your students may struggle with.
There are a few real-life lessons to use for teaching the addition and subtraction of integers. Some real-life examples are:
- Temperature
- being above or below sea level
- golf scores (above or below par)
- balancing your budget
We add and subtract integers all the time and don’t even realize it. Whenever you can practice math outside of worksheets is a win. Worksheets can totally reinforce what a child has learned, but when teaching them, it is important to make real-life examples as to create connections between the child’s interests or things they already have some knowledge about.
