What is geocaching?

This is not your regular scavenger hunt. Geocaching is a real world treasure hunt using  Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled devices. This global treasure hunt sets out the field for people to use their GPS devices to find caches or hidden stashes of varying objects.

How does geocaching work?

Caches are hidden all over the globe by geocachers then logged in by them on a Geocache website or smartphone GPS app. Caches also include a log to sign and are sometimes called “swag.”

Usually, “swag” can be homemade trinkets or anything small and inexpensive. People find the swag and replace it with their own swag to leave behind for another geocacher.

However, there are also larger caches (swag). They are sized from micro to large. A fun swag is also rated based on the level of difficulty from beginner to expert.

They can be hidden in public places or landowners can give permission for people to hide them on private property as well. They are hidden well enough that not just anyone can find them.

Why should you try geocaching as a homeschool activity?

Kids tend to have entertainment laid out for them. Geocaching is quite truly a homeschooling geocaching adventure. It gets kids out and exploring, eager to find a real word treasure.
