Thanks to the great internet there are many FREE resources for teaching a foreign language in your homeschool.
I have narrowed it down to 10 of the best ones, not in any particular order.

Most of these are complete courses and some of them are a great stepping stone to trying out a new language before you decide if you want to use it or not. You can also just use some of the videos, games and phrases to introduce your younger learners to a new language.

10 of the Best Foreign Language Freebies:

1. Duolingo

Duolingo is a free language-learning website that offers Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian. Duolingo is set up like a game where you unlock levels and win badges by learning new words and grammar. There is also an immersion section where you can practice translating texts. It is also available as an app on Iphone and Android devices!

2. BBC Languages

The British Broadcasting Network has a free languages website that offers 40 foreign language courses in French, Spanish, Greek, Chinese, German, Italian, Portuguese, and many more! There are “quick fix” common phrases, audio and video, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, activities and tests.

3. Latinum

Latinum teaches Latin online for FREE with audio resources. All of their course materials were created from out of copyright or copywright free materials. There are no need to purchase any text books if you are willing to use digital materials. You can learn Latin up to an advanced level.

4. Learn Out Loud 

Learn Out Loud is your destination for audio and video learning! They offer many free downloads in courses like Chinese, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese and many other languages. These are not complete courses, but a good way to figure out what you would like to learn and to experience the different languages.

5. Livemocha

Livemocha  is an effective, engaging language learning solution that delivers world-class instructional materials to libraries throughout the country. Comprehensive language courses in 38 languages blend learning materials with real-life practice with native speakers from around the world. This dynamic experience allows learners to build new skills, unlock possibilities, and expand their global community. There are also online learning classes for free!

 

6. Mango Languages

Mango Languages s is language learning for the adventurous, the ambitious and the curious. They also offer over 50 languages to patrons of the public library for FREE! You can get free mobile apps and online access. You can check to see if it is available through your local library HERE.

7. Kypros

Learn Greek online for free with Kypros! This site is composed of 105 real audio files that are around 15 minutes each. There are online student notes, a collection of collaborative learning tools and an online greek dictionary and greek spell checker. The text verions of the lessons have been contributed by students of the course and it is completely free.

8. Learn Spanish Online

Learn Spanish Online offers 903 free pages of Spanish grammar with audio files to guide all examples. Language learners can find everything they need–from accents to verbs. There are live video chats and books and poems available in Spanish audio versions.

9. Lifeprint 

Lifeprint is part of the American Sign Language University. ASLU provides many free self-study materials, online lessons, videos and information, as well as fee-based instructor-guided courses. Many instructors use the ASLU lessons as a free “textbook” for their local ASL classes.

10. Byki

Byki language learning software is presented in an engaging flash card interface, the system also tracks everything you learn, automatically presenting the appropriate material at just the right intervals – ensuring that the material you’ve covered is successfully locked into your memory. Byki Express is available as a FREE language-learning software and an excellent method by which to begin learning a foreign language. It establishes the fundamentals and gets you familiar with your new language fast. There are SEVENTY different languages that you can choose from!
