Do you know what platonic solids are? Maybe some of you know what they are but I had no idea. In searching for crafts to do with my kids, I thought mixing this craft with our geometry lessons would be perfect. This resource instructs us on how to make some platonic solids with straws and pipe cleaners.
Platonic solids are basically 3-D geometric shapes. In a platonic solid, all of the sides and angles are equal in shape and size to each other.
There is some really cool information in this post that your kids (and you) will find super interesting. Our kids love learning the meaning of words. It will be no surprise to some that the word platonic is named after the ancient Greek philosopher Plato.
In doing some more research, we learned that Plato wrote about platonic solids in the dialogue Timaeus c.360 B.C. He associated each of our world’s four classical elements (earth, air, water, and fire) with regular solids in this dialogue. My kids really enjoyed learning about this and your may too.
