The Seven Wonders of the Modern World is a list compiled in 1994 by the American Society of Civil Engineers. They took nominations from around the world and then chose the seven that they felt represented the best in modern civil engineering.

Our journey takes us throughout the Americas and to Europe to visit seven structures all completed after 1900, though some were started before that. We’ll see wonders built for business, commerce, and even survival. We’ll go from the tops of skyscrapers to underground tunnels.

This reading comprehension history unit explores seven wonders of the world including:

  • Panama Canal
  • Empire State Building
  • Golden Gate Bridge
  • CN Tower
  • Delta Works
  • Itaipú Dam
  • Channel Tunnel

History Printable Activities

  • Students start with the Panama Canal and then move forward chronologically, discovering each wonder in the order it was completed in.
  • There are interesting facts about the construction and use of each one.
  • Each of the seven lessons is followed by reading comprehension questions you can have your students answer aloud or in a notebook.
  • Optional vocabulary words help round out this unit that combines language arts and history in a fun way.
  • You can even mix in some geography if you keep a map or globe nearby during your study!

There are multiple ways that your homeschool kids can use this reading comprehension printable aside from reading and answering questions. Here are some ideas:

  • Create a notebook for each of the seven wonders of the world units
  • Keep a journal to reflect on what they have learned

  • Use a separate page to answer the questions with complete sentences
