This new year of 2020 marks the 125th anniversary of the first motion picture! What better way to celebrate the love of the big screen by immersing your children in free movie studies.
What was the first movie ever made and by whom?
The Lumiere brothers were French inventors and pioneer manufacturers of photographic equipment. They created an early motion-picture camera and projector called the Cinématographe. This is where the word cinema comes from. They created the film titled La Sortie des ouvriers de l’usine Lumière. (1895; “Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory”). It is considered the first motion picture to ever be made. It is 125 years old this year!
How to turn your children’s love of movies into a learning experience:
My oldest child is a huge movie buff. He has been into movies since he saw his first movie in theaters (Finding Nemo). He was obsessed with movies and wanted to watch them, and talk about them all.the.time. As he got older, he was able to follow guides and teach himself in our homeschool. I figured that highschool would be the best time to turn his movie interests into a learning experience. Instead of using an English curriculum for 9th grade I was brave and stepped out of the box.
You should have seen the expression on his face when I told him that he would be watching movies for a full one year highschool English credit! We spent his entire 9th grade year checking out older, obscure movies from the library, and finding them on Amazon. Then he would analyze the movies and write papers about them. We used the curriculum Movies as Literature with the accompanying student workbook. He is 20 now and still obsessed with movies. He will tell anyone that asks, that this was his favorite subject he ever did in our homeschool.
You can take your children’s love of movies, and turn it into a well rounded learning experience by adding in free movie studies. This can make for a really fun family movie night as well. Watch a movie together and then assign the studies for school work the next day! These types of things are great to do when you need a lighter school load. They work well when you are needing a break from teaching, like if there is a new baby in the house, or you are recovering from an illness. You can take it a step further by having them write papers about the movies and comparing and contrasting movies. They can even do a movie style book report to practice their public speaking skills.
