Football fans will enjoy these documentaries and tv shows about football. Many of these are based on real life stories, and can be slightly edgy. Make sure to preview or watch with your older teens, which can lead to some good discussions on the pressures of sports and peer pressure.

1. We Are the Brooklyn Saints (2o21) TV 14  – This is a documentary series about an inner city youth football program geared towards boys ages 7-13 in Brooklyn, NY. Follow along as their selfless coach, not only teaches them football, but life lessons as well.

2. Quarterback (2023) TV MA for language – A documentary series by executive producer, Peyton Manning. This series is an intimate look of what the life of a starting Quarterback is like. it follows quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota.

3. Titletown High (2021) TV 14 – A reality tv show series that follows a Georgia high school team as they try to win the state championship title. It shows the innerworkings for a highschool football team and their romances and rivalries as they train to be the best.

4. Coach Snoop (2018) TV MA for language – An inspiring and gritty series where Snoop Dogg creates a youth football team to help struggling boys to stay off the of the street and reach their goals.

5. Untold: Swamp Kings (2023) TV MA for language – This 4 part docuseries explores how ruthless football coach Urban Meyer turned the rag tag 2000’s era Florida Gators college football team into champions.

6. Untold: Johnny Football (2023) TV MA for language – A documentary film that traces the rise and fall of Texas A & M star quarterback Johnny Manziel.

7. Bella and the Bulldogs (2015) TV G – A fun and inspiring Nickelodeon comedy series about a cheerleader named Bella Dawson who joins the middle school football team.

8. Home Team (2022) PG – This family comedy is based on the true story of suspended NFL coach Sean Peyton. He tries to reconnect with his son by coaching the 6th grade football team.

9. Audible (2021) PG 13 – This is a short, emotional documentary about a deaf high school football player. It follows him as he is shaken by a friend’s suicide and how he copes with family and relationships while preparing for his last homecoming football game.

10. Quiet Victory (1988) TV PG – This is the Charlie Wedemeyer story, a heartfelt true story about high school football coach Charlie Wedemeyer who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Despite his disability, he continues to lead his team.

11. Friday Night Lights (2010) TV-14 sex, smoking – Friday Night Lights was a very popular football drama that aired for 5 seasons. It is centered on the rural town of Dillon, Texas where winning the state football championship is the most important thing. 

The series follows Coach Eric Taylor as he guides the high school football team through their stressful, pressure field seasons. It also follows the faculty, families, and town as they deal with the many issues that face small town America.

12. Gridiron Gang (2006) PG 13 –  Probation officer Dwayne Johnson helps to mold teenage inmates at a juvenile detention facility into a successful football team.

13. Triumph of the Heart (1991) TVPG – This made for tv drama tells the true story of pro running back, Ricky Bell who played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before he died of a muscle disease.

14. Greater (2016) PG – A heartfelt inspiring true story about Brandon Burlsworth, an overweight kid who was told that he would never be able to play football. Full of faith and determination, this is an underdog story about the most respected football player in college football history.

16. The Blind Side (2009) PG 13 – Based on the book with the same name, this heartwarming story stars Sandra Bullock, Kathy Bates, Tim Mc Graw and Quinton Aaron. The story of Michael Ohr, a homeless teen who was adopted and later became a successful NFL star.

17. Concussion (2015) PG 13 – Will Smith stars as a forensic neuropathologist who makes the first discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in a professional football player. This story brings the truth to repeated brain injuries and concussions in NFL football players.

18. The 5th Quarter (2011) Not Rated – Based on true events, this movie follows Jon Abbate as he loses his brother in a fatal car accident. He wears his brother’s number on his football jersey and uses the pain to push forward. He lead his high school football team in the most successful winning season in their school history.

19. The Rocket (2018) Not Rated – A small town story based on true events of a high school football star who endures a traumatic head injury and loses his dreams of playing football. This is an inspiring movie about faith and second chances.

Their son, a high school football star is caught drinking alcohol and their friends turn their backs on them. The mother learns that faith and family is what matters the most in life.

21. Facing the Giants (2006) PG – A film full of football action and drama about a Christian high school football coach who tries to inspire his team to use faith to conquer their fear in the game.

22. God. Family. Football. (2023) Not Rated – This docuseries has 6 episodes that follows Coach Denny Duron. He comes out of retirement to lead the original successful football program he founded at Evangel Christian Academy in Louisiana.

23. Reggie’s Prayer (1997) Not Rated – A pro football player retires to coach an Oregon high school football team and befriends a troubled teen and street thug, who is recruiting students to a life of crime.

24. Rudy (1993) PG – Rudy is about a young college student who was told he was too small to play football and dreamed of playing for Notre Dame. A good sports movie about how hard work and determination can pay off.

25. Run the Race (2019) PG – This is a Christian movie by executive producer Tim Tebow. It is about two brothers who use football to cope with their mother’s death and their father’s abandonment.

26. Season of a Lifetime (2012) Not Rated – An inspiring true story of faith and family about football coach Jeremy Williams who is terminal with ALS. He decides to coach for one last season and becomes a father figure to the African-American players on his team.

27. Bye Bye Barry (2023) 16+ – Famous NFL running back Barry Sanders stepped away from the height of his career and vanished from the lime light in 1999. This tells the story of why he retired so abruptly and the story of his life.

28. Kelce (2023) 16+ – This Amazon Original film follows Jason Kelce as he documents what he thought would be his last year in the NFL. It follows him and his brother Travis as they start their hit podcast, and as he grows his family.

29. Becoming the G.O.A.T. : The Tom Brady Story (202) 13+ – Learn the backstory of Tom Brady, the greatest NFL quarterback of all time and how he rose to the top of fame.

30. 80 For Brady (2023) PG 13 – Inspired by the true story of four lifelong friends played by Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, Jane Fonda and Sally Field. They travel to see Tom Brady and the New England Patriots play in Super Bowl LI in 2017. 

31. Born to Play (2021) 16+ – This documentary spends a season with women’s semi-professional tackle football team the Boston Renegades as they try to redeem themselves from losing the national championship.

35. The Longest Yard (2005) PG13 – Another Adam Sandler movie which is a remake of a classic sports comedy. An NFL professional who is sent to prison and puts together a brutal football game of inmates vs. guards.

36. American Underdog (2021) PG – A true story about Kurt Warner. He started off stocking shelves at a grocery store and becomes and  NFL MVP, Super Bowl MVP, and Hall of Fame quarterback.

37. Friday Night Lights (2004) PG13 – This classic football movie is based on a book about a poor, small town in Odessa, Texas and their high school football team of ​young athletes. This movie inspired the tv series of the same name.
