I remember homeschool days full of chaos years ago. It was before I realized I needed to pull the reins back and develop a more structured routine. Shame on me, because I was once an early learning teacher and my routine was GREAT – with my classroom.

Stepping into homeschool for the first time was so different. I had no idea what I was getting into even though I was sure I did. WRONG!

When I was an early learning teacher, I knew exactly what to do when it came to maintaining order in my classroom. I ran through routines and rules for an entire first week of school. Routines and going over rules over and over made my classroom run smoothly.

My students although they were really little, enjoyed the normalcy of school. If I were to rear off schedule they were sure to remind me. It was adorable. They knew what they had to do during reading time, what they needed to do after lunch, before lunch, during center time and more.

Fast forward almost a decade with my own children, and I swear all my training went out the window. I had to go back to basics and remember the strategies that worked for me so long ago. Even with those strategies, I learned some new few ones along the way and adjusted a few to make my homeschool work for us.

If you find yourself struggling to take the chaos out of your homeschool day, then glean from these practical strategies to encourage independent learning to tame the chaos in your homeschool day.
