Why STEM and STEAM?
Many homeschooling parents are intimidated by STEM, and it is understandable. If you are like me, you struggle to maintain lessons for each subject separately, let alone all together.
Once I got into the swing of homeschooling, I began to explore unit studies. Unit studies helped me to incorporate different subjects together and for both my children at the same time. I now sprinkle unit studies throughout the year to break up the monotony in our homeschool.
Unit studies are what made me curious about STEM. Initially, I thought STEM was about just sticking all the subjects together as I did with the unit studies, but it was so much more.
My kids and I learned that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) was more of a way of learning. It helps kids experience real-life situations that include troubleshooting and critical thinking. I love it. It is hugely satisfying to watch children work through STEM activities.
The Arts and Music in STEM
Once you work with STEM activities, you understand the necessity for the arts. The component of the arts rounds out the other subjects perfectly. The arts add creativity, design, and discovery to STEM.
My children, like many other kids, enjoy art and music. These components to STEM (STEAM) provide an element of innovation and creative interests to high-level learning. It’s impressive just how much children learn with STEM and the additional aspect of the arts rounds out their whole way of thinking.
The Americans for the Arts’ research reports that kids who are engaged in the arts a minimum of three days per week are four times more likely to do better academically than kids who do not engage in the arts. Art and music are clearly beneficial for our children.
In real-life situations, various disciplines are required. It is crucial for us to think from a multidisciplinary view to come up with the best outcomes. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) is an excellent source for a well-rounded education.
There are significant benefits for introducing and tackling STEM and STEAM in your homeschool.
These are just a few reasons I add it to my lessons periodically:
1. It has gotten my children interested in science, engineering, and yes, even math through projects and experiments.
2. STEAM helps kids think outside of the box by encouraging creativity and improving critical thinking skills.
3. It gives children the confidence to tackle tough challenges. They learn to begin from ground zero and build from there.
4. Kids feel more in control of their learning experience.
5. Learners can see how multiple disciplines work together for a complete learning experience.
6. My son is a hands-on learner, and STEM/STEAM are perfect for him.
