Learning About the Apple Life Cycle

There are many different ways that you can teach your kids about the apple life cycle with printable resources, hands-on learning, field trips and science experiments.

Learning about apples is such a fun activity to include in your homeschool. Kids love learning with food, and it is a great way to also discuss healthy choices for snacks and try different varieties of apples at the same time.

Life Cycle of an Apple Tree

Learning about the stages of the apple life cycle will teach your kids how an apple tree grows to produce those juicy apples that we all love. These are the 5 different stages of growth in the life cycle of an apple tree.

  1. Seeds – The seed from an apple is planted into the ground. With plenty of water and sunlight it will begin to form its roots.
  2. Sapling – The roots begin to push forth a very small sprout which will turn into a small sapling. After man years it will become an apple tree.
  3. Budding -After the apple tree is fully formed into an adult tree. Small buds will begin to emerge.
  4. Blossom Stage – The buds on the tree will begin producing apple flowers. These apple blossoms are lovely, and fragrant flowers are a very important part of the apple life cycle because they are the beginning of fruit.
  5. Fruiting Stage – Apples begin to grow where the blossoms were. It can take 160-180 days for those blossoms to turn into apples that are ready to be picked.

Fun Apple Activities

  • Visit a local apple orchard to go apple picking. Many apple orchards will have educational talks and even host learning field trips. If there isn’t an apple orchard near you, then go on virtual field trip instead.
  • Explore an apple theme in your homeschool. Take a week to do a full unit on apples. You can learn about Johnny Appleseed and even try different science experiments with apples.
  • Apple seed counting. Cut open an apple for a snack. Have your children pull out the apple seeds from the apple core. Sort them and count how many seeds are in the apple. This is such a fun way to practice counting.
  • Make an apple pie or apple cobbler. This is such a fun activity with younger students that love to bake and help in the kitchen.
  • Create a snack. Use this afternoon apple ring recipe and experiment with different toppings. Your children could even pretend to be food critics and write reviews of their creations. Don’t forget to rank them with 1-5 stars!
  • Learn about apple varieties. A great way to do this is at a grocery store or farmers market. While you are selecting apples you can discuss some of the different colored apples and varieties such as: Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Fuji, Gala, etc…
  • Learn a new song. Take a break from the desks to get up and wiggle while you sing-a-long with this apple tree tune.
