If you have been homeschooling for any length of time, you may have heard of the different styles or types of homeschooling. One popular choice and style of homeschooling is the Charlotte Mason Style.

Charlotte Mason was an educator in the 19th Century in England. Her belief system was that children should spend lots of time in nature, on handicrafts, learning good habits and being read aloud to. Lessons should be short and to the point so there is more time in the day to work on these other areas.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from Charlotte Mason:

“Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.”

“Look on education as something between the child’s soul and God. Modern Education tends to look on it as something between the child’s brain and the standardized test.”

“Our aim in education is to give a full life. We owe it to them to initiate an immense number of interests. Life should be all living, and not merely a tedious passing of time; not all doing or all feeling or all thinking – the strain would be too great – but, all living; that is to say, we should be in touch wherever we go, whatever we hear, whatever we see, with some manner of vital interest.”

If these thoughts sounds pleasant to you, then you may lean more towards the Charlotte Mason style of homeschooling.

What I like about the Charlotte Mason Method is that I can piece together lots of that style into my curriculum and throughout my homeschool. If you are eclectic, this works very well.

You can incorporate bits and pieces until you are more comfortable. You can start slowly by adding nature study, picture study, music study, copywork and narration alongside your curriculum you are already using.

This works well if you like to create your own curriculum, or you don’t want to switch over to a full Charlotte Mason style curriculum.
