Monkeys are one of the reasons I miss visiting wildlife reserves in America. If your kids like watching silly monkeys in their environment, then these free printables and unit studies about monkeys will be a fun addition to your homeschool day.
We miss seeing monkeys.
There are no monkeys where we live. There aren’t many animals where we live at all aside from birds, dogs, cats, and pigs. We see the occasional turtle when we visit the beach, which is fantastic.
Before studying monkeys, I thought there were thousands of species of them around the world. However, my kids and I found that there are only over 260 different species of monkeys worldwide. That makes learning about some of them a little more tangible.
My exciting experience with monkeys.
While in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Spain, we happened to be close to Gibraltar. We couldn’t last our entire tour without visiting Gibraltar – mostly because of the view and the Barbary Macaques.
We drove up a mountain to the Rock of Gibraltar. The sight was breathtaking. From the Rock of Gibraltar, spectators can see both Morocco, Africa and Spain from one spot. Above you can see a Barbary Macaque on the tip of the Gibraltar Rock and Morocco across the seas.
If this wasn’t cool enough, a sight I will always cherish is the clear divide between the blue of the Mediterranean Sea on the left and the blue of the Atlantic Ocean on the right (below you can slightly see the divide).
On top of this breathtaking view and geographical anomaly, we got to experience the Barbary Macaques. These monkeys roam freely and even steal any food visitors might have in sight. They are ruthless, grabbing any edible item from inside the vehicles or even your hands.
It was an unforgettable experience that I hope to take my kids to experience one day.
Monkeys are amazingly smart animals. Here are some fun facts about monkeys that my kids enjoyed the most or found interesting:
1. Monkeys are divided into two separate groups called Old World Monkeys (from Africa and Asia) and New World Monkeys (from South America).
2. The Mandrill is the largest monkey, with the average male weighing about 71 pounds. They are beautifully colored, but pretty scary to my kids and me.
3. The smallest monkey is the pygmy marmoset averaging only 3.5 ounces! My daughter thinks these are the cutest ever!
4. All monkeys have opposable thumbs (thumbs – opposite the fingers- allowing them to grasp and handle objects) like humans.
5. Some animals spend their entire lives in trees; these monkeys are called arboreals.
6. A group or community of monkeys are called troops, tribes, or missions.
7. Howler monkeys howl so super loud that they are heard over three miles away through dense forest!.
8. Monkeys groom each other to strengthen and repair relationships.
9. There is only one free-living species of a wild monkey in the whole of Europe.
10. Apes and lemurs, although they look like them, are not monkeys at all.
OK, one more. The very first monkey in space was named Albert (yes, there were more).
