Modern history is messy, but it’s important for students to understand what has happened and what is happening today so they can make intelligent and informed decisions about the future, for themselves, the country, and even the world. This FREE Modern History Activities & Notebooking: 2010s unit is a tool you can use to help your kids learn about and discuss recent events.

Over the last few months, we’ve been taking a look at key events from modern history, starting in the 1900s and working up through the 2010s. This FREE Modern History Activities & Notebooking: 2010s unit is our last unit.

One thing that all decades have the same is that history is messy. It’s largely made up of the stories of things broken people have done. Some have tried to do their best; others have done their worst. But it’s important not to skip over messy history, even modern history, because through it all, God is working out His plan for the world.

As Paul says in Acts 17:25-27, “And He is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything. Rather, He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man He made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from any one of us.” (NIV)

This unit uses puzzles, activities, and notebooking pages to help kids learn about:

  • the Deepwater Horizon accident (2010)
  • the Benghazi attack (2012)
  • the Boston Marathon bombing (2013)
  • the Presidential Election of 2016
  • the signing of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) (2018)

As students complete the various activities and puzzles, they will start to see an overview of the events. They can then do independent research to dig deeper and learn more about the people, places, and events discussed as they complete notebooking pages. The unit concludes with a crossword puzzle that reviews the material covered. Answer keys for all puzzles are included. You can even use this to help your students develop research skills that they’ll need for other papers and projects.
