How much do your kids know about the 1970s (other than the unique music and fashion)? Teaching modern history can seem challenging, but we have a FREE Modern History Activities & Notebooking series that can help.

Portrait of President Richard M. Nixon

This FREE Modern History Activities & Notebooking: 1970s unit looks at five key events from American and world history that happened during the 1970s. It helps your student learn about:

  • the Apollo 13 mission (1970)
  • the massacre at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich
  • Secretariat’s victory in the Triple Crown (1973)
  • Watergate and President Nixon’s resignation (1974)
  • the U.S. Presidential election (1976)

For each event, students will complete an activity such as a fill-in or a decoding puzzle. Completing these activities gives them a introduction to the topic as well as key information about it. After each activity, students can dive deeper into the topic by answering several questions on the notebooking pages provided. These are great ways to encourage independent research using an encyclopedia or other similar resource. The unit wraps up with a crossword puzzle reviewing all five events studied.

This unit is a great way to learn about modern history that gives plenty of room for rabbit trails that interest your students. Scroll down to grab your FREE instant download.
