Ideas for Using Animal Cutouts Printable Templates
There are so many ways to use our free animal printables and cutouts for fine motor practice, art projects, animal crafts, puppets shows and as story telling prompts.
You and your children will have lots of fun with these different ideas that will get them thinking creatively.
Practice Fine Motor Skills
Using animal cutout is an easy way to practice fine motor skills with your younger children. Make sure to use child-safe scissors to have your children practice cutting out the animal shapes.
Cut and Paste
After they have cut the shapes out of paper, they can glue them onto the matching pages in our printable pack Cutting and gluing helps with grip strength and strengthens the small muscles in their hands, and also helps with hand-eye coordination.
Grouping and Matching by Size or Type
Have your children sort the animal cutouts by size, type, or color. Picking up and placing the cutouts in different piles refines their grasp and release actions and helps them understand matching and likeness.
Stringing Activities
Attach a string to the animals the children they have cut out. Have them add pony beads or tie knots around the animals. This will help with their hand-eye coordination and the ability to manipulate small objects.
Animal Crafts for a Farm Theme
We love using crafts in our homeschool when we do themed learning. If your children are learning about farm animals you can use the free animal printables and cutouts to create a printable animal craft with.
You can make stick animals with the cutouts on a craft or popsicle stick (which can also be used with our puppet show idea.)
Make a pig mask with the printable pig mask available in our printable pack. Have your children cut the mask out and secure it with glue to a paper plate. You may need to help smaller children with cutting the eye and nose holes into the paper plate.
For an added challenge, older children can create 3D animal cutouts where they need to fold and assemble the parts into a standing animal figure.
Create a Farm Animal Puppet Show
You can turn the animal cutouts into finger puppets by cutting out the animal shape, folding and taping it together to be able to fit it on your child’s fingers.
Have them create their own farm animal puppet show with the cut outs by cutting the animal shapes out and gluing it to a craft stick. For best results and an extra layer of protection, you can add tape to the craft stick so the animal shape does not fall off when they are playing with it.
Children can perform the puppet show, retelling a story or inventing their own. If you have multiple children, each child can control one or more animal cutouts. They can take turns adding to the story, practicing cooperation and improv skills.
Farm Animal Story Telling
A great idea to help your children with recall and narration is by having them do some animal story telling in a creative way. Using animal cutouts for storytelling fosters creativity but also enhances language skills, comprehension, and emotional expression. It’s a versatile tool that can make learning fun and memorable for children.
Have them make up a story about the farm animals and use the cut outs to act out the story. They can do this with stick animals they create, or just by using the cut out shapes.
Scene Setup
Use a large sheet of paper, felt board or bulletin boards as a backdrop. Your children can draw a large background with a barn or a farm scene and color it in with crayons or markers. Place the animal cutouts on it to create different scenes for the farm animals.
Interactive Elements
Encourage the children to move the cutouts around as the story progresses, making them active participants in the storytelling process. Have them narrate a story to you about the animals as they move them along the board, or the paper acting out the story.
Character Development
Let each child choose an animal cutout to represent a character in the story. They can give their character a name, voice, and personality. Encourage your children to speak for their animal character, practicing dialogue and interaction with other characters in the story.
