The first history curriculum that I ever used in our homeschool, was Story of the World. My son is a history buff and I attribute that to all the history that we covered during our homeschool. He absolutely loved history and he especially loved hands-on activities, extra printables and being read out loud to.

This curriculum was the perfect fit for him and he really enjoyed the activity sheets. If you are wanting to save some money, you will love these free printables that you can use with Story of the World.

The Story of the World is designed for elementary children, though we have used it up through the seventh grade in the past. It is written in a narrative tone that is straightforward and written directly to the student. These books are designed to be read outloud to your children, though they can be read alone by an older student as well.

There are also some audio books that are recorded by storyteller Jim Weiss, that are wonderful! They are great for the busy mom who doesn’t have time to read aloud, or families that are always on the go. The Story of the World is well loved with many Classical Education style homeschoolers.

Why we love this history spine:

The Story of the World Volume is a spine that is the center of your history curriculum. What I enjoy about these books is that you can pick and choose what you would like to use, and how detailed you want your curriculum to be. The activity books are very nice, but I have found that sometimes we don’t use everything in the book. That’s why I like to create my own notebook of activities and printables customized to my child and their interests.

For example, my son was really into Egyptian mummies, pharaohs and pyramids. We took a lot of time on those chapters, and I was always digging out extra crafts, and resources for him to use. When we were learning about Vikings we also parked our studies there for awhile. We found that there are some chapters we won’t focus on as heavily, and that is absolutely fine to do!
