Although there has been some controversy with the history of the circus, kids are absolutely drawn to them. These free printables and worksheets all about the circus are great resources for a circus-themed unit in your homeschool.
I won’t be touching on the controversy, if that is OK. I am going to keep it on the lighter side of things.
When my kids were little, I took them to Barnum & Bailey Circus acts a few years before it closed for good in 2017. I wish I could say I hated it. However, my daughter still remembers her amazing elephant ride. She says she will never forget it.
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus began in 1919. Two shows merged to form this one. Its signature big top red and white tents went away in 1957 when they started using permanent venues like sports stadiums and arenas.
After decreased attendance, animal rights protests, and high operating costs, the circus made its very last show in May 2017.
The contemporary circus:
Some say that circus history goes back to the 18th century or maybe even back to ancient Rome. However, the “contemporary” circus popped on the scene in the late 1960s.
I think the contemporary circus has gradually moved away from using animals and worked toward a more aesthetic appeal.
The circuses that have evolved today display a higher standard of art and provide different art forms that wow the audiences. It is still my goal to take the kids to see a Cirque du Soleil performance if ever possible in the future.
Although the circus has become more of a visual art creation, circus themes in homeschool are still super fun.
