I live overseas, so I really can’t afford to spend hours online searching for resources. We pay for every moment we are online. It is pretty tough and frustrating as a homeschooling family to have to be aware daily of regulating our internet usage.

So to those moms or dads out there tired of searching for early reader resources throughout the web, I got you covered ;-).

Emergent readers vs. early readers:

I found it interesting that whether we search for early reader resources online or we search for emergent reader resources, the search results are usually the same. That is a little frustrating for parents trying to get their little ones to read. It can be the difference between learning letters and learning to sound out words. The learning curve between the two is a milestone away from each other.

I guess I didn’t really know the difference between emergent readers and early readers, so I wanted to clear that up before I proceed. I figured if I wasn’t clear on it, as a prior early learning teacher, then maybe some home educators with little ones might need some clarification as well.

Emergent readers are closely related to pre-readers. It is the very beginning of reading when kids start experiencing letters and sounds. Kids at this time are telling the difference between printed letters and pictures. They read from looking at pictures and can write with scribbles, gradually moving towards letter writing.

Early readers are different in that kids can start learning the concepts of words; they can begin reading sight words and start sounding out words they aren’t familiar with.

So if you are searching online for resources to help your child learn to read, know that you can start with emergent readers then move on to early readers.

Learning to read should be something that is celebrated in your home. From the positive way parents approach reading at their child’s early age, they can grow kids that may one day love to read.

Here is how you can help improve and encourage the reading environment at home:

1 – Give your kids prompts that are useful, like using the picture to support and help them sound out the words.

2 – Celebrate when your child does well. Use words of encouragement to acknowledge their strides, even when they at least try.

3 – Encourage them through their efforts. Ask them lots of questions like, “Can you try the first part of the word?” “How about the last few words?” “The sentence has a question mark at the end, how should we say that sentence?”

Emergent and early readers help children gain confidence in reading. The more they practice, the more confident they will get. A convenient part of printable early readers I that your children can take them anywhere you guys go; doctor appointments, grocery stores, or on the way to the park. Just throw them in your bag and have ready-reading-time anywhere.
