Worksheets and Printables All About Pigs

It is so fitting that I write about pigs. If you knew me before a decade ago, you would not believe that the statement was about me. The way fate would have it; I would go from a city girl to a girl with pigs. Why not learn all about pigs with my kiddos?!

Use these worksheets and printables all about pigs to learn interesting things about pigs with your kids. Pigs are quite fascinating creatures.

My husband literally is at my in-laws’ home to neuter some pigs. I am not joking. Just a few weeks ago, our pig (sow – a female pig) had 13 piglets. Where I live, anything over ten pigs delivered is considered AMAZING. Pigs are such a high commodity on the island. This is my life now.

My close friends who know me can’t help but laugh. I am convinced that the heavens have a sense of humor. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jesus is laughing up there eating popcorn. When things happen in our lives, and we can’t help but laugh – because things are too nutty to be true. That is me, and having pigs.

Why me? Why pigs?

I am from the Bronx, New York, a city girl to the core. I love the hustle and bustle of the city streets. The people are speaking all different types of languages, in a hurry to go places they don’t really want to be. I miss the music and catching a cab to fight traffic to the other side of town. Well, that is not exactly where I ended up.

I followed my husband as he followed Christ, straight across the world to take care of properties for his parents. We moved to an island in the South Pacific Ocean, and low-and-behold, he takes care of pigs along with the property – lots of pigs.

One time he even went away for a few days, and I had to feed them. It was crazy. I almost cried. I am laughing now, but boy was I really almost shedding a tear as I had to pour the slop on a trough to hungry, loud pigs.

It wasn’t my favorite thing in the world, but I did have my kids record it so that I can show it to my friends – who love me, and laugh with (at) me. They never thought I would be taking care of pigs. I don’t like dirt, most animals, or… nature. Don’t judge me. I hated the beach as well, yet the Lord placed me in the middle of an island surrounded by beaches.

Who would have thought I would end up here, yet here I am. I appreciate the little things the Lord has blessed us with. In a country where pigs are prized animals, I learn to appreciate having them. They are a blessing to my husband. Yes, this city girl has turned into a pig owning island girl.

Now, let’s move onto learning all about pigs in our homeschools. They aren’t just the pink animals we see on a farm in cartoons. I wish they all looked like that, but most do not. They are nonetheless, interesting animals to study.

Check out some interesting and funky facts about pigs that your kids will enjoy:

• A group of baby pigs (piglets) is called a litter, drift, or a drove.
• A group of pigs can be called a sounder of swine or a team of hogs.
• Wild pigs are called boars (We usually associate them with having tusks.)
• Pigs are mammals, just like us.
• They have an extraordinary sense of smell. Pigs use their snout to find food and to sense the environment around them. (We have to be really quiet when the pigs are feeding at home; if not, they all scurry away.)
• Even though pigs have four toes on each limb, they only walk on two of them.
• Pigs have 15,000 taste buds.
• Despite their body size, pigs have small lungs.
• Pigs like to sleep really close together, sometimes even nose to nose.
• Mud is a pig’s favorite hangout spot, not because they are lazy, but because it keeps them cool.
• Pigs are symbols for good luck in Germany.
• They are symbols of fortune and happiness for the Chinese.
• Pigs can be trained to do tricks.
• Newborn piglets can recognize their mother’s voice. (They get nursed by mom and mom sings to them!)
• All continents have pigs except for Antarctica.
• In the 13^th to 15^th century, people stored their money in jars called “pygg,” which may be why we now have “piggy banks.”

The moral of the story is this:

God’s plan for our life is 100 times better than what we could ever think up ourselves, and it may look completely different than what we imagined.

God’s will is His will, and there is no better place to be than right in the middle of it.

Beaches aren’t bad at all.
