How to Help Your Child Trust God’s Protection (Even When Life is Tough)

Have you heard of stories about how the Lord will bless you if you do this or that? Whenever I hear people say the Lord wants you to be happy or the Lord wants you to prosper, as if that was His purpose for us, I check out of the conversation. I know firsthand that life is not always easy, and God’s protection is interwoven through trials and times of suffering and grief. We can help our children trust God’s protection even when life gets tough.

Isn’t it funny how we may think about ways to teach our kids to trust God, when we really need some work on it ourselves? I love that teaching our children about God’s Word sometimes isn’t always just for them. Who am I kidding? It is never only just for them.

We can learn so much from teaching our children in our homeschooling journey. I mean, I have personally learned so much about geography and mathematics. They are things that I just can’t remember learning from my public school experience.

As a busy homeschool and work-from-home mom, I will be honest that making Bible learning a priority has helped me exponentially. We make the Bible a part of our schooling throughout the day, throughout our lessons, and throughout their experiences. Pointing my kids to Christ in our lessons helps me in my walk as well. It also helps my kids point out things to me.

There is no question that I glean from developing my children’s lessons and I glean from teaching my kids about God’s Word. I am currently working on a lesson on trusting God’s protection even when life is tough.

The reason I want to teach my kids to trust God’s protection is because I know that life may not be easy for them. I want to help prepare my children, if at all possible. I spent much of my life not trusting God, yet each day He has been faithful. I look back and wonder how I doubted Him. Even in the very toughest of times, He was there.

I remember a time in my past when I felt as if my world was crumbling down. I remember seeing black, but a slight glimmer of white — which I knew was Jesus. I didn’t want to talk to people, I didn’t want to get out of my bed, my friends had to take my kids for a time. I was afraid and almost frozen to think that I had to live life with so much uncertainty.

I know, that I know, that I needed to trust in the Lord. He protected me and brought me through it. I want my children to have the tools they need to know they can turn to the Lord in their scariest situation, in their loneliest of times, and in the toughest of trials.

There are some scriptures that I will have my kids memorize throughout our lessons. God’s Word will help your children trust Him to protect them in the good times and the bad.

Psalm 34:19 The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.

Zecharaiah 4:6 Then he said to me, “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

A great way to teach our kids children to know that the Lord is worthy of our trust, especially in our trials is by studying the names and descriptive titles of God. Teaching children the names of God will teach and show your kids that God is powerful, He is a Creator, He is a Savior, He is with us, He will help us and more.

Elohim means “God” – This name refers to God’s power. He is the ONLY God, the ONE, the Supreme true God.

Jehovah Rapha means “Healer, the Lord who heals you” – This name is one that brings us comfort in God’s sovereignty.

Yahweh means “The Lord” – It is from the Hebrew word for “I AM,” the proper name of the divine person, coming from the verb which means to “exist, to be.”

El Elyon means “God Most High” – This name is throughout the Old Testament showing God is above all gods, the most sacred and highest above all.

El Roi means “The God Who Sees” – This name points to God’s character in that when we feel we are alone, HE sees us.

Yahweh Nissi means “The Lord Is My Banner” – This name of God specifically proclaims the protection, leadership, and deliverance for His people. HE had protected the Israelites against their enemy, the Amalekites, and He offers us protection and deliverance today.

Yahweh Shalom means “The Lord Is Peace” – God is the only One able to give us the peace that passes all of our own understanding.

El Shaddai means “God Almighty” – God’s name reminds us that He is all-powerful.

Yahweh Yireh means “The Lord Will Provide” – God will provide for our every need.

While you are teaching your child to trust God’s protection, even when life gets tough, it can really help you trust in His protection as well. Make it a point to finally set yourself free from fear and trust in God through it all. As you work towards that, your child is sure to follow.
