Including music appreciation in your homeschool is an awesome way to enrich your children’s education. There are many ways that this can be done, and they don’t have to cost a fortune either. Many people have a hard time with this subject as they are not musically inclined themselves, so included here are a few basic resources and simple ways to introduce your kids to music.
Not only will children benefit from music appreciation, but learning a musical instrument can enhance math skills, coordination, social skills and language. Music is a wonderful gift that you can give to your children.
Genres of Music
First, start by introducing children to different types of music. You can find resources at the library or use a streaming service to introduce your kids to different types of music such as classical music, the Blues, Jazz and Folk Music. Softly play music while you are homeschooling, to help your children relax or during quiet time.
Have children research and study composers and the eras they belonged too. These will make great unit studies as they resesarhc each composer, the era they lived during and the instruments they played. They will love learning about Beethoven and how he was able to compose music, even though he couldn’t hear!
YouTube has tons of videos of different genres of music as well as videos to help you learn how to play different instruments. These videos can help encourage your child learn about different instruments and help them decide if and what instrument they would like to learn to play.
If you are able to, children will benefit from paid lessons. Though for this you will need to purchase an instrument for your child to practice with, as well as the music lessons, it is a great opportunity for children. They could also take singing lessons or join a choir if they prefer to sing.
