I have always loved putting things in order – alphabetical, color spectrum, sizes – any sort of order. I liked things neat and tidy, which stands to reason I would love sequencing. I loved reading passages on worksheets or tests and answering questions about the order of events.
I was so excited when I found out this was actually a ‘thing’ to work on with my kids, I was almost giddy. My kids…not so much. However, over the last few years of working on sequencing in not only math, but reading, science and history, I have seen a vast improvement in their comprehension and memory skills.
In math, sequencing is vital. Everything has a specific order it must be done or the answer will not be correct. Science is much the same way, especially when it comes to experiments. And of course, history goes in a specific order or many things either wouldn’t have happened or don’t make sense.
But really, sequencing starts with reading. When reading a story as simple as a nursery rhyme, students can learn to put the actions in order. This not only builds their comprehension skills, but helps them work on visually recalling events and be able to organize them efficiently.
Use these sequencing printables to teach order, comprehension and improve memory skills.
