I took typing in high school, way back in the day when we each had our own TYPEWRITER. That was long before all of the devices of today that have done terrible things to the way people type (or rather don’t type.) I fear that this upcoming generation’s typing skills will be nothing more than fast finger-typing on smart phones.

As homeschoolers, we have an opportunity to hone these skills in our children in multiple ways. Instead of having them write papers out by hand, why not teach them how to use Word and properly type it out? These are valuable skills that they will most likely use in some capacity throughout their adult lives.

I was introduced to www.typedojo.com and after checking it out, am pretty intrigued. This website will help improve typing skills with speed tests. The free typing tests measure speed and accuracy and are broken down by skill and grade level.

A pretty neat feature that impressed me is that the word list options can be geared to a specific subject, such as science vocabulary, geography, nouns, math words, and more. Each grade level has different options.

You can also choose timed tests in 1 minute, 3 minute, and 5 minute increments, plus WPM and Ten Keys options by grade level and earn printable typing certificates. This free tool will help you practice and improve upon your typing speed & accuracy.

Typing is a life skill no doubt. It uses muscle memory and through touch typing and lots of practice, your children can become quite proficient at it. This site is a great, free typing tool that you can use to measure your children’s abilities and progress. Their site is really easy to navigate, although there are 2 ad spots you should be aware of if you let your kids loose on it. I didn’t discover any pop-ups or obtrusive ads though, so that is a plus.

You can take the free timed typing tests without logging in, but if you create a {free} account you can track your progress and print off certificates and such. This is definitely a new tool in our homeschool arsenal!

Dance Mat Typing has really cool typing games for kids too. They offer free lessons, finger charts, typing games, and more.
