It’s  hard to believe that in this day and age, animals are still facing extinction and are categorized as endangered. Endangered animals aren’t very far removed from us in proximity. For instance, we just found out that certain species of sea turtles found on the island where we live are considered endangered.

That has prompted my little ones’ curiosity to find out more about endangered animals. If your kids are exploring this topic as well this school year, then grab some of these resources and worksheets all about endangered animals that can help bring their lessons to life.

We never really stop to think about the animals all around us at times. Maybe it’s because we are so involved in our own lives.

Once we realized that the sea turtles in the ocean around us are classified as endangered, we began to notice that we are seeing fewer and fewer of them around the waters. We very rarely see them at all anymore. It is quite sad.

We began to research and learned that the Hawksbill Turtle and the Leatherback Turtle have both lost their population by 90% in the past 100 years. Eighty-percent has been lost only within the last ten years (One Kind Planet). My kids were shocked about how recently they have lost so many.

You wouldn’t think it, but many of our favorite animals growing up are considered endangered now. According to One Kind Planet, animals like the gorilla, rhino, orangutan, and even tigers are making the top ten critically endangered lists across the globe.

Educating our children about the effects of why these animals are considered endangered species can be quite tricky. Yet, the more kids are informed about this subject, the more they are aware of the impact they have on their environment.

Why study endangered animals?

The word endangered is quite powerful. Kids can quickly relate the word to knowing that the animals are actually “in danger” from the environment around them. And we humans, have a lot to do with this.

We, as a people, are doing things to hurt the animals — some intentional and some as a byproduct of our actions.

People hunt animals for food or entertainment/leisure.

We also destroy the places where they live to build things that we want, like access to roads or homes.

This is pretty sad. However, it doesn’t have to be such a downtrodden topic for our kids. We understand that the Lord is sovereign, and he has left us clear instructions to follow about how we should treat and view animals as part of His creation.

We found some parts of this resource helpful about the Bible’s Teachings on Protecting Animals and Nature (click the top link on that page for the free pdf) to share with my kids. It is a good depiction of how animals fall into the scheme of God’s will and design.

The Lord has left us with scripture, which clearly states our role in taking care of animals and nature. Here are just a few:

Proverbs 12:10 – A righteous man has regard for the life of his beast.

Psalm 145:9 – The Lord is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made.

Psalm 50:10-11 – For every beast of the forest is mine and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

Luke 12:6 – Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.

Psalm 104:24 – O Lord, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy creatures.

These Bible verses are great to memorize alongside your endangered species lessons to create awareness for our little ones. Your family can also find it enjoyable to put their love for animals into action.

Here are some ways that your family can get involved in the awareness of endangered species while learning:

Field trips

Plan a trip to a conservation center and let your kids explore how they take care of animals the right way.

Purchase cruelty-free brands in your home.

Read labels and have your kids do some research about cruelty-free brands available in local stores as an alternative to other brands. Ethical Elephant has a list of 500+ cruelty-brands your kids can research.

Watch documentaries or movies that focus on animals and the environment.

Kids really enjoy nature shows – well, my kids do. I love how children can find animals and how they live so intriguing. There are swarms of videos on Netflix or Youtube that can help them learn.
