What’s New About Sonlight Science

Sonlight Science is still the literature-based program you know and love! It still includes uber-fun hands-on activities, complete with a supplies kit and step-by-step directions in both written and video format.

New! Sonlight Science: Hands-on, Literature-based, and STEM-centered

Here’s what’s newly updated in Sonlight Science:

1. New Books

The product development team looked at each book in Sonlight Science to make sure every title is up-to-date. Some books were replaced with fresh titles and some old favorites were kept.

Sonlight added multiple new books to the programs, including more engineering titles. But every book selected still passes the Sonlight test:

  • age-appropriate
  • gorgeously illustrated
  • filled with easy-to-understand illustrations and diagrams

As before, every Sonlight Science program includes a biography of an influential scientist. For example, Level C includes a biography of Nikola Tesla.

The books beg to be read and re-read. These are titles you’ll cherish in your home library for as long as you have children (and maybe even when they are grown!).

2. New STEM Integration

The new, 2021 Sonlight Science levels K-E were designed to follow the classic Sonlight model of learning (reading, discussing, and doing) while also adhering to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)¹. These research-based, up-to-date science standards are simply good instructional practice.

Dozens of scientists, esteemed scientific institutions, and science-based businesses have put their support behind these standards. Now you have even more assurance that Sonlight Science provides an outstanding science education—at home.

You’ll see the NGSS at work in Sonlight Science with a greater emphasis on thinking like an engineer and the 5th day reading assignments that emphasize engineering.

3. Activities Now Correlate with Experiments

Sonlight Science has always been the ideal combination of reading and doing. But the weekly activities didn’t always connect to the weekly reading passages. Now they do!

With the new Sonlight Science, the weekly experiment you do on day 4 directly correlates to what you read on days 1, 2, and 3. The literature provides the context, while the experiments allow your children to experience the scientific process for themselves.

New in 2021, Sonlight Science levels K-E now include Discover & Do: Science Experiments. With Discover & Do, children will not just memorize the steps of the scientific process. Rather, they will conduct simple, engaging, hands-on experiments at home and actually use the scientific method to explore their world in an enjoyable and interactive way.

Additionally, Sonlight Science includes the all new Discover & Do: Science Experiment Videos. These videos provide reinforcement of the concepts observed during the experiment and heard in the weekly reading passages. The highly entertaining videos reenact all of the experiments your students perform, providing review, additional factoids, and excitement to truly enhance your entire science experience.
