Help sharpen your student’s reading comprehension skills and learn geography at the same time with this U.S. Geography Reading Comprehension Unit

Regions of the United States Reading Comprehension Geography Unit workbook cover

Each of the seven lessons in this U.S. Geography Reading Comprehension Unit are short and bite-sized (generally between 200-300 words) so your student doesn’t get overwhelmed by the reading assignment. Each lesson introduces your student to a different region of the United States. They’ll learn about:

  • the Northeast
  • the Midwest
  • the South
  • the Southwest
  • the West
  • the Pacific
  • Alaska and Hawaii

Each lesson has short, informative text followed by four comprehension questions based on what was read. There are multiple ways you can use the unit:

  • The student can read the passage and answer the questions.
  • A parent/teacher can read the selection and ask the questions orally; answers can be given orally or written on notebook paper.
  • You can also use this unit as a guide for a notebooking journal. The student can read the lesson text (or a parent/teacher can read it aloud) and use a notebooking page for written narration using the questions as writing prompts. This often works better for students who struggle with reading comprehension questions.

Each lesson also contains suggested vocabulary words your student can look up definitions for and write them in a geography notebook.

The United States Reading Comprehension Geography Unit is intended to be a supplement to your study of U.S. geography and is geared for grades 4-8.
