Upcycling is absolutely awesome! There are so many ways to upcycle things that can actually cause our environment harm. We can teach our kids how to do this, one project at a time. Learn this upcycling project with your child that teaches how you can start making plastic bags into yarn – its called plarn.

How to Make Plastic Yarn

I live on an island, heavily influenced by the western world. Some things are good and other things really bad. The accumulation and excess use of plastic bags is one of the latter. Plastic bags are a horrible substance that runs our environment, yet people continue to use them as if it is OK.

Years down the road it won’t be. Right now plastic bags are hurting sea life and are everywhere. They really have no necessary use as long as we have our own material bags to take with us to the stores. I pray we can get there one day.

I am not a tree hugger by any means, however since moving to an island the Lord has truly opened my eyes to His wondrous creation! We could do the same for our kids and help them stay aware of little things we can do help.

You can literally use this plarn for anything you would normally use yarn for, however with more durability.

There’s nothing really complicated to it, you only have to make one long spiral cut. With just some imagination and someone’s plastic waste, your kids can make something beautiful to keep, decorate for the home or give as gifts.
