Cabin fever is real, people! Going on a winter photo scavenger hunt is the perfect way to enjoy the sites and sounds of winter and cure cabin fever.

I didn’t really realize the effects of cabin fever and the ‘moody blah’s’ (that’s what we call the depressive moods of winter at our house) until we moved to a place where it was pitch black dark at 3:30 pm in the afternoon the week of Christmas.

It’s super easy to want to stay inside huddled under the fuzzy blankets and sip hot chocolate and watch reruns of your favorite old TV shows and movies.

But if you homeschool, you know you need to get out, get some fresh air and get some exercise. Sometimes getting inspired to bundle up is probably the hardest part. So instead of shoveling snow or de-icing the car, how about an enjoyable mid-day nature walk.

You can even make it simple copy work if you like. Then, pick the perfect time of day for your homeschool and get outside. Grab cameras, phones, and anything else you might want to use to capture a few images based on the theme and scripture.

The very act of putting a camera in a child’s hands helps them slow down and really look at things. In this fast-paced, instant-gratification world we live in, it is so important to teach our kids how to slow down, be intentional, and see the beauty of Creation. Adding scripture helps us go even deeper into understanding and appreciating the beauty of God’s word and God’s world. The beauty of nature and the inspiration of scripture are just what is needed to combat cabin fever and the ‘moody blah’s’. 

For younger kids that are non-readers, you may want to just give them the word and perhaps tell them the scripture too. Later, in your conversation, remind them of the scripture. You can work on fine motor skills by encouraging them to write scripture as copy work or by drawing a picture of what they captured an image of while doing the photo scavenger hunt.

Tailor The Photo Scavenger Hunt For Each Family Member.

For elementary thru high schoolers suffering from cabin fever, the same photo scavenger hunt activity above also works well. With just a few simple modifications, the activity turns in to a creative assignment.

Here are a few ideas:

• Memorize the scripture.
• Add the photo scavenger hunt as an assignment to a Photography for Kids elective course.
• Create digital images and share them electronically with friends and family.
• Use the images as part of a science or history project/presentation.
• Explore fine arts (both visual arts and music) by learning about other works of art that are based on the same subject or scripture.

Everyone will enjoy a short walk around the block or to the park to see what inspires them. If you get no further than the front yard, that’s ok too! Nature can be studied without going far. The beauty is in slowing down and noticing it. That’s what a winter photo scavenger hunt is all about!

When you are all done outside, coming back indoors for a warm cup of hot cocoa or spiced cider is the perfect way to share pictures and start a discussion about the verse with your kids.
