“A Journey Through Grammar Land” by Vernie O. Jones & Frode Jensen is a fun and innovative way to teach grammar to students from 5th-7th grade; but, it can also be used for older students who may have had trouble understanding these concepts.
The curriculum is composed of 3 separate workbooks (Parts 1-5) and 2 Test & Answer booklets. Parts 1 & 2 cover subjects, predicates, nouns, pronouns, and verbs. Parts 3 & 4 cover adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions; and, part 5 covers simple and complex sentences.
All materials are consumable, but the questions could easily be answered on a sheet of paper if you are keeping the book for future students. “Grammar Land” makes learning the basic grammar rules easy for students by explaining them with an exciting and adventurous tale.
In the first half of each book we follow our hero “Tank” as he travels through Grammar Land with “PG,” his guide. Through all of the lively characters we meet, such as “Conductor Compound” and “Major Punctuator,” we gain understanding of the basic parts of speech. Because the characters and situations in the story present these rules in an exciting way, students grasp the concepts more readily.
In the second half of each book are the worksheets based on that days’ lesson, but they also offer review of concepts previously learned. This is helpful to those students who need the reinforcement of ideas. Not only is the story exciting, but it is illustrated throughout with informative drawings that help solidify the information for the student. Notes are also provided for the teacher, although the “Notes” page is hidden in the middle of the book rather than at the beginning.
“Grammar Land” is a thorough and complete grammar curriculum that is sure to bring concrete understanding of these seemingly abstract concepts. If you are looking for a curriculum that will bring these concepts home to roost then “A Journey Through Grammar Land” is for you.
