Hello, fellow non-science moms. I am with you and I feel your pain. Science was never my thing. How exactly do we teach science, like biology, to our kids when we are NOT science moms? Thankfully, there are resources to teach biology that can help you along the way.
Science was never something I was excited about until I took a forensic science course. Every other science course was a blur to me. As homeschool moms, we don’t want that for our kids. We want to grab their attention, we want to teach in a way that they can retain information.
Some subjects are easier than others to do this with. Science was one of those subjects that I just knew I needed to work harder on when it came to teaching my kids.
Do you have anxiety about homeschooling at times? I think we have all had a feeling of, “we may just screw this one up – and bad!” I know it is hard to share with others that feeling, but it is real. Well, science was one of those subjects for me.
Teaching biology was a gateway for me to get comfortable with teaching science. Why do you ask? Because we know that biology is the study of living things. Who created all living things? GOD!
I knew that I could begin biology with a great foundation from which to build. Studying God’s Word with my kids helped tremendously. I began biology with, “God created all living things, and biology is the study of all those living things.” That helped me and helped my kids put the rest into perspective.
Instead, of teaching science, we were taking the stigma attached to the word science away and dissecting it for what it really is. Science is the effort of humans to understand the natural world around us.
For Christians, science is the effort made to understand the natural world in the context of God creating the natural world and us studying the things in it. Our kids thought that was pretty cool.
How do we start teaching biology in homeschool, when we aren’t science moms?
Many of my mom friends are NOT science moms. We are the ol’ (not old but ol’) run-of-the-mill homeschool moms who want to create great learning experiences for our kids.
A few of us admitted that science wasn’t our favorite subject when we first started homeschooling. Science is a subject that we really can take out of the box and teach in ways completely different from the traditional science classes in traditional schools.
We don’t have to follow a textbook unless we want to and that is FREEING.
The following are a collection of resources some of my friends and I all have used, at some point or the other, to help us teach biology – along with a few new resources I know your homeschool will enjoy.
