Resources for Learning About China

When I think about China, I think about a country full of culture, vibrance, exotic traditions, beautiful architecture, and unique customs. Whether you are conducting a China Unit Study in your homeschool or assigning a research project, these excellent resources for learning about China will provide you with all you need.

China is a diverse country filled with different customs and traditions, yet is very modernized and technologically savvy.

Since the ’70s, China has had one of the world’s leading economies after it opened its economy, becoming a market-oriented system. However, for centuries China has been one of the most advanced civilizations regarding the arts and sciences.

Since 1949, China has been ruled by the Communist Party of China. It has no main religion because the government does not support religious memberships. Which leads me to a prayer request for you all.

Help me pray for China.

I recently met a Chinese missionary who is going to seminary in New Zealand. It was fascinating to talk to him as I had so many questions about how he became a Christian in China.

He told us stories of how Christians have to meet underground or in homes privately. That is because their government actively searches for people trying to practice Christianity.

What was extremely sad about what he said was this. Although the gospel gets to the people, the groups of Christians are separated.

Unfortunately, since the government doesn’t let any sermons or teaching enter the country legally, many believers are left on their own and to their own interpretations. They begin to believe falsehoods as their access to the outside world is limited.

For instance, about 3,000 websites are blocked by the Chinese government – including YouTube and Facebook (NationFacts.net)

Many take what they have learned but then get nothing else. Please do not quote me as I am unsure if this is a fact, but enough research online supports what he said.

In addition to this, churches are required to register with the government. However, once they are registered, they come under government control and are restricted from preaching about Christ’s second coming and other biblical truths.

Therefore, many churches choose not to register – which is illegal. Non-registered churches get raided and many are arrested. It is essential to share this with our kids as one day we may face the same, and we should be prepared.

Now, let’s move on.

Here are some facts about China that your kids will find interesting:

China makes eighty percent of the toys around the world.

Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, is located in China and borders Nepal. Mount Everest’s highest point reaches over 29,000 feet.

It is rumored that over three million people live in a cave near the Yellow River. It is said millions more live in other caves as well. I guess these cavemen haven’t evolved yet (just little dig on evolution.)

Up until three years ago, China for many years had a one-child per family policy to control the population.

The abacus is an ancient Chinese counting machine used in schools to learn math.

Students in China have to learn about 5,000 Chinese characters. At a minimum, in college, they need to learn about 10,000, but around 40,000 characters exist.

Eight is thought to be a lucky number. There is no wonder why the government scheduled the 2008 Olympics to begin 8/8/08 at 8:08 p.m.

A palace complex in Beijing named The Forbidden City has 9,000 rooms.

During a Chinese festival in the spring, people race boats decorated with dragon designs. Wouldn’t that be a sight to see?!

You aren’t going to believe this. Ice cream originated from China in 2000 BC when the Chinese mixed soft milk, snow, and rice.

The Chinese calendar is based on the moon and is the oldest known calendar in the world.

Many Chinese children have crickets as pets. They put them in a box and even have their crickets fight each other. (Don’t get any ideas, kids.)

The last Chinese emperor was named Puyi and became a leader at the age of three.

In China, there are vending machines that sell live crabs. I thought coffee of sale in vending machines was cool!

The Great Wall of China is the absolute most massive man-made structure in the world. It stretches 5,500 miles (8,850 kilometers).

China is also a culture rich country that has been home to inventions like paper, toilet paper, the compass, kites, and more. More importantly, China is a country full of our brothers and sisters in Christ that can use our prayers. Therefore, let us keep them in our prayers.
