Once, on a camping trip several years ago, I heard my first real-life hoot. It was the dead of night, and I was the only one outside of the tent. Everyone else had gone to bed. As I was finishing up some last minute things, a really loud, otherworldly, sustained hoot drifted out of a tree that was about 30 yards away. To say that I was initially terrified would be an understatement. Were the demons of hell there to drag me off to the abyss? Or perhaps a cougar was watching me from the darkened shadows planning on how to get nine meals out of me?

Then my brain kicked into gear again, and I realized it was just an owl. Whew.

That’s my one and only owl story.
