Kristina Hernandez admitted she was in the “never homeschooling club” until she didn’t have a choice. Then, when her school closed this spring, she discovered an unexpected surprise.
“It was hard, and I fought with my kids, and I worked late, late hours, but admittedly, I loved having my two children home with me,” she confessed in an opinion article for Fox News.
A media relations professional and a freelance writer, Hernandez lives with her husband and two daughters who are entering kindergarten and fourth grade. As a family, they’ve already made the decision to homeschool this fall. While the virus was what initially drove the family into homeschooling, the fear of getting sick was not the main reason in their decision. Instead, their reasoning included the following:
1) Uncertainty surrounding if/when in-person instruction takes place
2) Probability of spending the entire day indoors in one room
3) High chances of virtual school and hours of daily screen time
The Hernandez family is certainly not alone switching to homeschooling in 2020. In fact, earlier this year, an online poll revealed that a majority of parents are likely to consider homeschooling again. While Hernandez realistically knows that homeschooling while working a full time job won’t be a walk in the park, she ultimately knows it’s the best decision for her family.
“I’m the primary educator of my children, and I can’t rely on the state to do it for me,” she said. “This will be hard. I have no idea how hard, but I imagine it will be a time where I will need to dig deep, to summon the courage and grace and supermom strength I know is within me to make this work. ”
