FREE Teach Your Child To Read Flashcards

Reading can be a challenge for some children and easier for others. With my first child, it was a challenge. She started off strong, but after a bit of time, began to feel defeated. And so did I. We were working through the recommended reading program Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. But what I started to feel was that although the lessons were easy, the work of reading wasn’t.

With my daughter feeling the difficulty of reading, I slowed right down to almost no reading. I wondered if maturity was what was needed to help her develop in reading.

During our break, I was exploring ways to help make reading more fun, easy and memorable as it seemed that reading from a book might have also played a part in weighing reading down for her.

So the first thing I did was come up with letter flashcards. These were designed to help my daughter review the sound of each letter. This turned out to be a great resource to help reinforce something simple like letter sounds. Along with that, I also saw a confidence come back in my daughter which was so rewarding.

Seeing that first success with flashcards had me pursue creating word flashcards. Again, these were to help her sound out each letter in the word, but then to also begin the process of improving her working memory.

These flashcards also proved to be successful as she gained more and more confidence in her reading.

Lastly, I wanted to make reading more fun and challenging as she progressed, so I added some games. The games included:

• Timing how many cards she could do in 1 minute.
• Using the same cards every week and timing her to see if her reading fluency improved.

Flashcards are such a great way to help reinforce what’s being learned and it changes things up so that it’s not in a book. And I must also say that there’s satisfaction in adding a sticker to a sticker chart for each lesson that’s completed, so I created that, too.
