If you ask a parent what subject scares them the most, the answer is almost always Math. Math can be overwhelming and scary to teach, especially if you are not good at math and had a hard time with it in school. We are going to help you explore your many options of math curriculum for your homeschool.

Math Curriculum - Exploring Your Options text with photo of chalkboard and books with math problems.

Math Curriculum

If math was a struggle when you were growing up, it doesn’t have to be the same for your children. As a homeschooling parent you can offer them so much more than you experienced in a large classroom setting with a boring math teacher.

Improve Mathematic Skills

There are lots of ways to help your students improve mathematic skills in your homeschool. You have the option to choose from such a wide variety of math curriculum that can cater to how you like to teach, and how your child likes to learn. There are also many math websites for kids and supplements that can help encourage them.

Math stress is a real thing for children, and even parents! You can keep the stress out of math by switching things up. Additionally, you can help your kids over come their anxiousness surrounding math one-step at a time.

What to Look for in a Math Curriculum

When you are searching for a math curriculum you want to make sure that it is something that you are comfortable teaching. If you are not naturally strong in math, you will want a curriculum that you understand.

You also want to make sure that the teacher guide gives you step-by-step instructions on how to teach it and that it includes solutions so you can understand and learn alongside your child.

If you are not comfortable teaching you will want to find a curriculum that teaches it to the child in a way that is easy for them to understand.

Two Main Types of Math Curriculum

There are two main types of math curriculum: spiral math and mastery math. Let’s discuss the difference between the two, to see if math mastery or spiral math would be a better fit over the other.

Spiral Math Curriculum

What is spiral math curriculum?

A spiral math curriculum introduces and teaches a math concept and gives a few practice problems to go along with what was just taught. In each math lesson, students will encounter math problems that include the new concepts that were just taught, as well as past concepts mixed in for review.

A student who understands math and is naturally strong in it will do very well with the spiral method. If you have a child that struggles with math it may move too fast for them.

Mastery Math Curriculum

A mastery math curriculum is a more traditional style of math done in school. One topic is taught at a time. The assignments and worksheets are on the individual topics, with nothing else added. This style is better for children that struggle with math, as it focuses on one topic at a time with practice again and again so it can set in.

If you have a child that doesn’t struggle with math, and can move onto the next concept quickly, they may find a mastery curriculum boring.

Math Curriculum

With so many different math curriculum options for homeschoolers, it’s helpful to take a look at each one. We’ve listed out all the major math curriculum that is used by homeschooling families.

Our list below is broken down into two sections: K-6 Math Curriculum and Middle & High School Math Curriculum. You will see the curriculum options for math listed with the name of the program, followed by the grades and price. Also included are summaries of each math curriculum option, and we indicate if it’s a textbook-based program or online.

K-6 Math Curriculum

If you are looking for homeschool math curriculum, this extensive list of options can help you decide what might work best. Let’s face it, finding the best homeschool math currriulum can be a bit stressful, but knowing what to look at can be helpful.
