If you are studying American History, American historical figures, or the Westward Expansion, then these free printables and unit studies about Lewis and Clark will be a great resource for you to explore.
I will be the first to tell you, I am NOT a history buff. I mean every time I think of Lewis and Clark, I immediately think of Bonnie and Clyde for some reason. Don’t judge me.
Pray for me. I have a good 8 years of homeschooling history left, and I need all the help I can get.
So, apparently, Lewis and Clark have nothing to do with Bonnie and Clyde except that they traveled as a pair. I am way off, and I am not ashamed. It makes a fun introduction for my kids.
They both love history like their dad, so I am an odd man out. So, me teaching history in my homeschool is me learning history as well.
This is what we learned (together) about Lewis and Clark:
Following one of the greatest land real estate deals in American History (the Louisiana Purchase in 1803), President Thomas Jefferson planned an expedition to investigate the new territory.
Before this time, the country only stretched to the Mississippi River.
President Jefferson assembled a team (Corps of Discovery) for the 7,000-mile expedition called the Voyage of Discovery. Jefferson assigned his secretary Captain Meriwether Lewis as the leader and Captain William Clark as co-leader to carry out the expedition.
Heard of Sacagawea? Well, this is where she comes in. Lewis and Clark enlisted a young Shoshone Native American woman, Sacagawea (and her husband) to join them as interpreters/translators throughout the expedition.
Lewis, Clark, and their team were able to map uncharted rivers, mountains, and lands. They took records via journals detailing the Native American tribes along with scientific notes on the animals and plants of the areas which they had never seen before.
The team discovered the grizzly bear and prairie dogs during their mission.
Following this expedition and stories Lewis and Clark gathered along the way, people dreamed about venturing westward themselves.
