Of course, I am a little biased.

I am not trying to brag, but I have actually lived in Spain.

When I first joined the military, I knew I wanted to travel. The recruiter stated I could go to college for free, and I could travel. The first thing I did was try to get stationed in Spain, and the second thing I did was enroll in college.

Somehow, for whatever reason, I knew I wanted to live in Spain.

Why do I love Spain so much?

I was a single mom, and although that could have put a stop to many of my adventures, it didn’t at all.

Because the country has such a family-friendly atmosphere, I took my daughter with me everywhere. We went traveling together to fiestas, carnivals, and even weekend getaways.

We were able to experience the unmatched culture of flamenco music, the talent of intense flamenco dancing, and bullfighting.

In Spain, traveling was a must. In only a weekend, we could experience tiny villages full of life. A bunch of us would chip in to rent a house for the weekend. The homes were ten-bedroom homes.

We would chip in and buy groceries, cook, and walk through the streets of a little town on a hill full of tiny white houses and cobblestone streets.

I was the only one in the group with a child and no one minded at all. It was an amazing time for us, full of fun and no worries. That is what I associate Spain with.

My daughter went to a Spanish school, and her first language was Spanish. I am forever grateful for the experience. These are all the reasons why I love Spain.

Don’t just take my word for it. Check out some more interesting facts about Spain to share with your kids:

1 – I was stationed in the United States Naval Hospital, Rota, Spain. Naval Station Rota has been used since 1953 when Spanish dictator Francisco Franco sought to strengthen relations with the United States to improve the local economies.

2 – Francisco Franco ruled as a dictator until he died in 1975.

3 – Jerez De La Frontera (right next to the base) is the sherry region’s heart. Jerez also specializes in dancing white horses.

4 – Although to us around the world, the language is Spanish, in Spain, their language is called Castellano. There are 4 other languages spoken in Spain – Catalan, Aranese, Galician, and Basque.

5 – Spain has a royal family. They are a constitutional monarchy.

6 – The world’s largest olive oil region is in Spain. The country produces between 40 – 45% of the entire world’s olive oil. People still gather their products by hand.

7 – I am so grateful I could take my daughter with me everywhere. One of those reasons was because of the awesome festivals that happen in Spain. Kids dance outside in the festivals right alongside their families.

It is a joyous occasion for the entire family. Spain has more festivals than there are days in the year!

8 – Siestas are real. Everyone takes a long lunch break. Life is laid back, and there is no “rushing” anywhere. Families gather together mid-afternoon (around 2 – 4 pm), its the main meal of the day.

9 – On the night before a wedding, grooms must serenade their brides at her window.

10 – Madrid, Spain’s capital, is right in the middle of the country. There is a marker placed at Puerta Del Sol to show the landmark. I have been there and even spent New Years in Madrid for one year.
