Every third Monday in February is Presidents’ Day (February 17th in 2020). On this Presidents’ Day, we can teach our children how to celebrate the lives of all presidents, from George Washington to President Donald J. Trump. These resources all about the presidents will help your kids celebrate their contributions to the United States, their lives, and the history around their presidential terms.

As a veteran of the United States military service (U.S. Navy), I have understood and fully appreciate the seat of the Presidency of the United States of America. I was taught to respect authority and follow the chain of command while in the military.

Even as a Puerto Rican female from the Bronx, New York, I understood that I was employed because a man knew the need for the military. Our leaders saw the need for us to be in the field and to support our country; making it safe for laymen to live normal lives. I got it.

When I became a Christian, I understood the role of our Commander in Chief even more so. I respected the role of a man voted democratically to run our country. This is what the Lord says about it:

Romans 13:1–14 – Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and God has instituted those that exist. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.

The idea that the Lord has explicitly told us to submit to our authority, provided a whole new meaning for me.

This is particularly difficult for people to bear, specifically when it comes to rulers who are unjust or downright cruel. There are some things we can’t explain. We can, however, obey the Lord in what He says. The Lord clearly tells us what to do with unjust rulers:

1 Thessalonians 5:12–18: We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

Even if we do not agree with who sits in the president’s chair, we do the above to respect and submit to their authority.

Our children will see, if they have not already, news that does not do this at all. In fact, people are doing the exact opposite of this in our great nation today. It is our duty to teach our children how the Lord would want them to be in this matter.

Presidents’ Day should be celebrated in the land of the free. It should be celebrated as it represents our freedom to vote, our freedom to a democratic government. This is a right not afforded to all people around the world.
