Spelling was always one of my favorite subjects. I love figuring out patterns, or making them myself, to remember how to spell things. I loved going through my spelling list over and over just for fun. I usually made perfect scores on my weekly tests, but I got terribly nervous when I had to get up in front of the class or group of students to spell.
Nevertheless, I want my kids to be good spellers. Not just good readers, but spellers too. Even though we are in the digital age and spell check is everywhere, it is important to know how to spell. While being a great reader doesn’t always mean you know how to spell, knowing how to spell does help you be a better reader.
Knowing how to spell can also help students as they get older and learn a foreign language, because they have a basis for the connection of sounds.
Many people believe English is one of the harder languages to learn because our rules overlap. And while that may appear true, there are ways to “decode” those tips and tricks so that spelling actually makes sense, instead of feeling chaotic.
That being said, it can be difficult to teach kids how to be good spellers. It takes practice and lots of discipline. But it doesn’t have to be all work and no play. Combining their spelling practice with some fun learning can be a great way to help them improve their spelling skills.
