Before we started homeschooling, I had never heard of emergent readers. I knew of early reader books and sight word readers, but I didn’t know what the point of emergent reader books were. Now that we are teaching our fourth child to read, I am totally and completely in love with emergent readers.

What are emergent readers? Emergent readers are books that help young readers who are learning their letters and sounds plus a bank of sight words. They rely on pictures to help give context and clues that aid in their reading and understanding the text.

If there is one thing I’ve learned when teaching my kids to read, it is to have a lot of reading practice handy and ready to go. Once they figure out the “pattern” and it clicks, they are eager, excited and ready to devour anything you give them – so be prepared.

I also love having emergent readers for every subject you can imagine, because you never know what they will want to read about or learn. So I have gathered over 190 different emergent readers and free printable phonics books on a variety of subjects and holidays. And the best part…they’re ALL FREE!
