1. Alice in Wonderland – by Lewis Carroll

My first experience with Alice in Wonderland was from the Disney Cartoon movie as a child. I don’t remember reading the Lewis Carroll version until I read it aloud to my own children in our homeschool.

2. Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater

Mr. Popper’s Penguins is one of my favorite read alouds. It is just the cutest story!

3. Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

Charlotte’s Web is one of my personal favorites and one of the first chapter books that I read on my own without any help!

4. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

Black Beauty is a favorite classic book. It is a children’s story written in 1877 as an appeal for the humane treatment of horses. Black Beauty ranks among the most famous and popular of horse stories written directly from the horse’s perspective. My daughter has read this book 5 times already, and she cried every time, but it is still one of her favorites.

The Black Beauty Story from Horses and History Throughout the Ages talks about the history of the Victorian Industrial age and how Anna Sewell spoke up about the mistreatment of work horses.

5. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The Secret Garden is a timeless classic that has left generations of readers with warm, lifelong memories of its magical charms.

6. Peter Pan by James Matthew Barrie:

Peter Pan is one of the greatest fantasy tales ever written. Everyone has seen the classic Disney movie, but have you read the original book?

7. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe holds a special place in my heart reading that book as a young child. It is a great allegory and classic fantasy book loved by many!

8. The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carl Collodi

The Adventures of Pinocchio was written in 1881 and went on to become a children’s classic around the world. This book was the basis for the favorite animated film by Disney. We read this in our homeschool last year and my children were surprised at how different it was from the movie. It is fun to read and compare to the movie.

9. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Road Dahl

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a classic story that is loved by all ages. It also has a couple of pretty amazing films that were inspired by the book.

10. The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahamme

Begun as a series of letters from Kenneth Grahame to his son, The Wind in the Willows is a timeless tale of animal cunning and human camaraderie. Serving as home to the most lovable creatures in all literature―Rat, Mole, Badger, and the irrepressible Toad of Toad Hall; with his goggles, overcoat and love of very fast cars.
