The world can seem really big and far for many young learners. How do we get our kids to learn and understand other children all around the world, just like them?

Unit studies about children around the world are great ways to get your kids engaged in knowing all about others their age across the globe.

Our world truly, as kids get older and older, is getting more and more interconnected. The United States is already a melting pot, and other larger countries in the world are growing to be the same. My kids got to learn firsthand, just how interconnected the world really is.

We moved to a tiny island in the South Pacific years ago. From this small island, my kids have met other children from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and more. It is fascinating for them to learn about how their friends “do” life where they grew up.

Just the mere fact that I let them go outside, play and get dirty here, is such a change from life in America. The cultural dancing here and the work kids are expected to do on the farms and at home, has made their lives completely different.

Meeting kids from all over the world has allowed them to accept differences and embrace the uniqueness of the kids they have met. I believe this is something kids can take with them straight through adulthood.

Some of your children will grow up to travel the world and even maybe live in other countries. Through unit studies about children around the world, you can influence and teach your children to appreciate the differences that make us all unique and special – the way the Lord created us.

Where do you start when making unit studies about children around the world?

Do you think you won’t have enough information for a unit study? There actually may be too much information that you have to cut the study down some or expand it through a whole semester.

Some topics to include in your unit studies about children around the world are:

  • What is life like in other countries for kids?
  • What do kids wear there?
  • What do kids eat in other countries?
  • Which holidays do kids in other countries celebrate?
  • What other religions to kids practice?
  • Find the countries on a world map.
  • Learn to say hello and goodbye in different languages (See videos below).
  • Books about children from different countries…

We love using these books in our homeschool. They go along with Simply Charlotte Mason’s geography studies:

Children love learning about the way other children live around the world. They like to understand how family dynamics work, what types of holidays they celebrate, and even how their school days go.

Studying about other children around the world and their cultures through unit studies will broaden their minds and help them be open to the world around them. The world is getting smaller and smaller, with the use of technology and real-time communication.
