4. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell:

Black Beauty is a favorite classic book. It is a children’s story written in 1877 as an appeal for the humane treatment of horses. Black Beauty ranks among the most famous and popular of horse stories written directly from the horse’s perspective. My daughter has read this book 5 times already, and she cried every time, but it is still one of her favorites.

The Black Beauty Story from Horses and History Throughout the Ages talks about the history of the Victorian Industrial age and how Anna Sewell spoke up about the mistreatment of work horses.

Anna Sewell has some beautiful quotes that would be perfect to use in a copywork or commonplace book after reading Black Beauty. Here are some favorites from Brainy Quote.

5. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett:

The Secret Garden is a timeless classic that has left generations of readers with warm, lifelong memories of its magical charms.

The Adventures of Pinocchio was written in 1881 and went on to become a children’s classic around the world. This book was the basis for the favorite animated film by Disney. We read this in our homeschool last year and my children were surprised at how different it was from the movie. It is fun to read and compare to the movie.
