As my family exercises together, we ask the kids to count our reps, in Spanish. I love how my kids enjoy learning a little bit of my native tongue. They are also beginning to gain fluency in a third language, my husband’s native language (Tongan).
We have an advantage in that we both are fluent in our native languages. However, not knowing the language as a solely English speaker shouldn’t stop you from teaching your kids another language.
Why teach your kids Spanish?
There is no doubt that teaching Spanish to your children is providing them with a huge advantage. Being bilingual in today’s world is an automatic benefit, if not a necessity, for our children, hands-down.
Spanish just happens to be one of the most popular language choices of people worldwide – 500 million speakers to be exact. In some parts of America, you may even need to know Spanish. Of course in the commonwealth of Puerto Rico, but also in the southern parts of Florida, California, and even in boroughs in New York.
The Spanish language is the third most used language on the Internet. This means there is an abundance of Spanish resources for learners online. My very favorite part of teaching Spanish is that it is a language easy to learn because it is phonetic and uses simple grammar.
Tips for teaching Spanish?
Don’t be discouraged. While your kids learn numbers you can learn them too. That is part of the success in teaching your children another language, you learn right alongside them.
There are some other successes that will maximize your Spanish lesson to teach Spanish numbers.
- Teach your kids as early as possible. Your Spanish lessons can increase in content as your students get older. Yet, starting early helps.
- Make language learning a part of your homeschool schedule throughout the year; like Bible studies and physical fitness.
- Combine learning with playing Spanish games and activities. When kids are physically engaged with learning the content sinks in. Make dances, use toys, play games, use puppets, use flash cards, and more to tap into different learning styles.
- Incorporate Spanish vocabulary into your daily routines. Encourage your family to use the vocabulary they have learned in their everyday speech. You can assign one day a month or week to incorporate as many Spanish numbers or Spanish words as possible.
- Use Spanish learning videos.
- Start with teaching numbers in Spanish.
How do you teach numbers in Spanish?
Since you can start teaching Spanish at a young age, numbers can be one of your very first lessons. So, make your Spanish numbers lessons fun.

- Use games and online games.
- Practice speaking the numbers with your child in the family’s daily routine.
