Delving into history from a Biblical worldview brings new meaning to how we read the Bible today. Explore these resources for learning about Ancient Babylon to learn more about the history that shaped our Christianity today.
Ancient Babylon is one of the most famous cities of any ancient civilization. It rose from a Mesopotamian city that ran along the juncture of the Euphrates River and Tigris river. It eventually became one of the most powerful cities/states and namesake of one of the greatest empires in history.
Its’ ruins can be found in modern-day Iraq; that is 59 miles southwest of Bagdad. The word Babylon is the Greek meaning Gate of the Gods.
Babylon is known for its impressive walls and buildings particularly the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. These gardens were man-made cascading terraces of flora and fauna, watered by machines – as cited by ancient writers as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
The 1500 B.C.E., the Babylonian cities were known for scribal learning. They also produced writings, on divinity, astrology, medicine, and mathematics. It definitely was an important center, yet that is not the extent of this empire in the realm of a Biblical worldview.
When it comes to Christianity, Babylon is extremely significant. Babylon, since The Tower of Babel, has been known for its reputation of rebellion against God.
It continuously has been used as a symbol of evilness and defiance against God. You will find scripture like the following one laced throughout the Bible.
Revelation 17:5, “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.”
Tower of Babel.
At the Tower of Babel, God commanded humanity to increase in order to fill the earth.
Genesis 9:1, “And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.”
Yet the people said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens” as to NOT have to scatter the earth — the direct opposite of what God commanded! They took it upon themselves to go against what God intended to happen.
Babylon was mentioned in God’s word in the books of Daniel, Jeremiah, and Isaiah, but mostly in the Book of Revelation.
